General aviation commonly refers to that part of the aviation industry that engages in activity other than scheduled commercial airline activity. This may include charter operators, aeromedical operators, agricultural aviation businesses, aviation-based fire-fighting services, training and aerial work such as aerial photography and surveying. It also includes private, business, recreational and sports aviation activity and supporting businesses such as maintenance providers.
In September 2006, the previous Government established an Industry Action Agenda for the general aviation industry.
The primary purpose of Action Agendas has been to promote industry leadership, help industries develop strategies for growth, agree on priorities and make commitments to change.
The process has been driven by a Strategic Industry Leaders Group.
The Final Report of the Strategic Industry Leaders Group was released by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, on 6 August 2008.
The Minister announced on 10 April 2008 the Australian Government's commitment to the development of an Aviation White Paper.
