The Regional Summit held last October is having a significant impact, according to the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Professor John Chudleigh. Professor Chudleigh said that the Steering Committee has been working constantly since the Summit to translate the many recommendations from the Summit participants into potential actions that could be encompassed by the Government and the community.
"The Regional Summit was a significant milestone for rural and regional Australia and it is important that this momentum is not lost. The Summit's recommendations are being considered by every Government Department in the lead up to the 2000 Federal Budget and I am heartened by the response to the Summit's clear recommendations on a wide range of issues," Professor Chudleigh said.
"The 'turning of the tide' for regional Australia will depend on the development of a genuine partnership between Government and regional communities that will enable communities to build a better future for themselves with the support of government. Such partnerships must be built on trust in each other to ensure the actions of Government are in line with community needs."
The Summit Steering Committee believes there must be a long-term commitment that must encompass a vision for how regional Australia will share in the general prosperity of the Australian economy. Professor Chudleigh conveyed this clear message to the Taskforce of Departmental Secretaries with whom he met on behalf of the Steering Committee in mid January.
"The Steering Committee believes the Summit is a once in a lifetime opportunity to tip the scales back in favour of regional Australia and will continue to work to ensure the Summit's recommendations are kept before the Government in developing its future policies," Professor Chudleigh said.
