A group of five public servants from the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services have taken to the regional and rural roads of Australia as part of the Centenary of Federation celebrations. The group will be joined by four more riders en-route.

The group is taking part in the Links in the Chain Centenary of Federation Bike Ride and will cycle from Uluru to Canberra over 26 days between 13 April and 8 May, at the same time as similar rides will occur across the nation.

The Links in the Chain Centenary of Federation Bike Ride is a coordinated series of bike rides starting from various points across the country to converge on Canberra as part of Centenary of Federation activities. The ride also reconstructs the ride made in 1951 to celebrate fifty years of federation.

The involvement of the Department of Transport and Regional Services was coordinated by a group headed by Mr Winton Brocklebank, Mr Phil Price and Mr Alf Hoop.

The aim of this ride is to unite the outback, and all communities, towns and cities of the Commonwealth.

"This ride allows those of us based in Canberra to get a first hand view of the roots of this nation - our regions," said Mr Brocklebank.

"In addition to the personal satisfaction of being involved in such a memorable event in Australia's history, our involvement provides a direct opportunity for us as Public Servants to interact with regional communities."

The group is travelling travelled from Yulara near Uluru and proceed through country Northern Territory, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales before heading into Canberra on 8 May. The route will cover countless regional centres including:

Glendambo, Woomera, Port Augusta, Gladstone, Auburn, Morgan and Renmark on April 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 respectively.

During the Ride the participants from the Department of Transport and Regional Services will take the opportunity to meet with regional Australians from all walks of life, while promoting the services and programs delivered by the Government through the Department of Transport and Regional Services.

About 400 cyclists taking part in the ride will converge on Canberra from three directions on May 8 to be greeted on the steps of Old Parliament House for an official welcome by Prime Minister John Howard.
