Members of the Devonport community gathered today to receive official information they have been aware of for a long time - they are a successful community!

Devonport has been highlighted nationally as an example of a regional community successfully managing change, and was today presented with the findings of the community action research project by Jan Richardson, Tasmanian member of Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson's Regional Women's Advisory Council.

The community had been part of the nation-wide research project initiated by Mr Anderson which sought to identify the key characteristics of communities that are dealing effectively with change, what motivates them, and the barriers they face. The research is unique in that it looks at the issues from a woman's perspective.

The report highlighted the factors related to Devonport's success at dealing with change as: a sense of belonging; ensuring things were good for everyone; caring, cultivating and encouraging growth; creativity and ingenuity; and sharing responsibility for the future.

The report also acknowledges barriers to further success including unemployment, negative attitudes and lack of resources.

Ms Richardson congratulated the women of Devonport who participated in the exercise saying it would help inform government policy, and also be used by other communities experiencing difficulty with change.

"The women in Devonport showed us how they have handled change; they respond willingly to a challenge, and have demonstrated just how important volunteers have been in overcoming their communities obstacles.

"Throughout this whole process, the Devonport participants stressed the importance of a 'can do' attitude. They were never pessimistic."

The Devonport Success Factors report paints a bright picture for the future of the town over the next five years. Projects such as the development of The Playhouse for families with young children highlights the Devonport community's commitment to progress.

The community is building on their successes and filling gaps, leaving no doubt about their dedication and determination to move past the obstacles and towards their most desirable future.
