On 8 May 2007, the Australian Government announced that South Australia's local councils will receive an extra $13.5 million in 2007-08 for their local roads, in addition to funding through programmes such as the Financial Assistance Grants and AusLink Roads to Recovery.
South Australia's local governing bodies will receive an estimated $57 million over the period 2007-08 to 2010-11. This funding addresses South Australia's disadvantage in the distribution of the local road component of the Financial Assistance Grants.
Supplementary local road funding is allocated to South Australian local governing bodies on the recommendations of the South Australian Local Government Grants Commission. Eighty five per cent of the supplementary local roads grant is allocated to councils in proportion to their share of local road Financial Assistance Grants, while fifteen per cent is allocated to special road projects.
