Aviation Security Screening Review

The aim of the Aviation Security Screening Review is to examine a range of factors affecting aviation security screening.

Terms of reference

The terms of reference for the review are to ensure that:

  • the security outcome from Australian aviation security screening is agreed and clearly articulated
  • the approach to, and delivery of, Australian aviation security screening is nationally consistent
  • the regulatory regime is appropriate to the agreed security outcome
  • Australian aviation security screening operates in a manner which achieves the agreed security outcome in an efficient and effective manner.

What's in Scope?

The scope of the Aviation Security Screening Review covers screening of passengers, carry-on and checked baggage. A range of factors affecting screening will be examined, including:

  • Purpose of screening
  • Overall regulatory provisions
  • National consistency
  • Human factors
  • Screening point design
  • Technology

Where are we now?

In-depth discussion papers identifying and exploring the issues arising from these key areas of the screening process have been prepared and circulated for industry comment. The public submission stage closed on 19 September 2008. The Screening Review Taskforce is currently preparing a report for the Minister.
